Overview
Hepatology medicine is on the threshold of massive changes. With the imminent confirmation of new drug treatments for Hepatitis C to be released onto the PBS by the Federal Government later in 2015 general practitioners will be well placed to encourage their clients living with Hep C to embark upon treatment. These new treatments herald the commencement of Interferon free treatments which mean oral medication-only treatment.
Learning outcomes
- Outline the global and national impact of viral hepatitis on the public health of communities.
- Describe the particularly changing nature of hepatitis B and C infections on the Australian community and health care professionals caring for them.
- Discuss the status in relation to the process of the new treatments being signed off by the Government and subsequent availability for those affected by Hepatitis C.
- Illustrate relevant clinical knowledge to support work with clients who will be eligible for the new treatments such as the types of drugs available, the efficacy, the side effects and the treatment algorithms that will direct management options.*
