Presenter: Suzanne Hull - Suzanne is an Independent Respiratory Educator with more than 20 years' experience in the field. Suzanne previously worked as the Paediatric Asthma Educator at Gosford Hospital and was the Education Officer for the Australian Asthma and Respiratory Educators Association. Suzanne is currently contracted by the National Asthma Council and the Australian Lung Foundation delivering asthma and respiratory education to Primary Health Networks. Nationally, she is also a conjoint lecturer with Charles Sturt University in the Asthma Management subject. Suzanne’s area of interest is setting up Nurse Run Clinics.

Overview: This session provides an overview of asthma and COPD overlap syndrome and current evidence-based management using the COPDX Guidelines. It includes medications and devices used for COPD and the importance of action plans for self-management.

Topics: Asthma/COPD overlap, COPD management guidelines, COPD medications and devices, COPD action plans and current smoking cessation options.

Learning objectives:

  • Describe asthma – COPD overlap syndrome
  • Describe how to access the COPD-X and asthma management guidelines
  • Identify the steps to demonstrate the correct technique for inhaled respiratory devices
  • Summarise the importance of written action plans in the management of asthma-COPD overlap.
